Israel Idonije Doesn’t Deny Tipping Off Detroit Lions To Bears’ Calls; Jim Schwartz Calls It ‘ridiculous’

Israel Idonije agrees to join Lions

Brees_Drew 131006 [203x114]

“He’s a chunk of years younger than me, and in better shape, I would say,” Marz says, laughing. They do have one more important connection: Both are creative forces for The Protectors, a graphic novel coming next year from Idonije’s own Athleta Comics that aims to appeal to both comic nerds and sports fans. “I want to bring the worlds together,” says the football player. “I always felt like it hadn’t been done correctly so why can’t I take a shot at it? Idonije is in New York City this weekend for a reason other than sacking Eli Manning or Mark Sanchez, as he and Marz will be at the Javits Center for New York Comic Con showing attendees what they have in store with The Protectors, which features art by Bart Sears. Originally conceived by Idonije during three weeks of Bears training camp in 2007, the concept of the book is an origin story for a different kind of superhero.

Bush ran for 139 yards on 18 carries, and the Bears player told ESPN that Bush had most of his big gains when Chicago ran a power stunt that it eventually stopped using. Bush gained 112 yards on 11 first-half carries. On the TV replay, the Bears did not appear to complete a defensive-line stunt, where one lineman loops around another, altering his rush lane, on any of those runs. Idonije, who signed with the Lions as a free agent this summer after playing the last 10 years in Chicago, including the final two under current Bears defensive line coach Mike Phair, said its a compliment to the Lions offense that he was accused of insider trading. It just says a lot about the preparation and execution of our offense to go out there and just to be able to deliver and dominate that defense the way they did such that they thought theyre getting some sort of inside information because theyre executing so efficiently, Idonije said. Lions coach Jim Schwartz said at his news conference today that any suggestion Idonije provided his new team with enough insight to alter the game was ridiculous and devalues what Bush accomplished on the field. We rushed for a lot of yards because we blocked them and Reggie Bush broke tackles and things like that, Schwartz said.

Brandon’s Israel Idonije adds precision to Lions pass rush

More From Israel Idonije appears to be a perfect addition to the Lions’ suddenly deep defensive line rotation, writes Kevin Seifert. Blog After spending his first nine seasons with the Bears , Idonije jumped to Chicago’s NFC North rival. He signed with the Bears’ practice squad as a rookie late in the 2003 season after initially entering the league as an undrafted rookie free agent with the Cleveland Browns . Primarily a special-teams standout and reserve defensive lineman for his first six full seasons, Idonije emerged as one of the Bears’ starting defensive ends in 2010 and went on to post a career-high eight sacks. He combined for 12.5 sacks over the past two seasons, splitting time between end and defensive tackle in Chicago’s nickel package. Bears general manager Phil Emery publicly stated at the NFL combine in February that the team wanted to re-sign Idonije, but at a reduced price. The 32-year-old defensive lineman earned $2.5 million last season.

O’Hara: Israel Idonije goes to Washington

Wright (@mikecwright) September 29, 2013 If Idonije was able to tip off Detroit about Chicago’s play-calling, that’s bad coaching by the Bears staff. Justin Rogers (@Justin_Rogers) September 29, 2013 Truth. The Bears decided to keep Lovie Smith’s old system intact despite a new coordinator in Mel Tucker, and they allowed Idonije walk to Detroit without too much of a fight. Not only was Idonije a very smart player clearly but he also was very popular in the Bears’ locker room. That is, until he may or may not have tipped off his new team. His new first-place team, that is.

What does he see his role being for the Lions in 2013? Left end inside wherever they want me, he said. Ive been fortunate to play every position on the line and get some good reps at every position. Wherever they need me inside, outside Ill just strap it up and go to work. In a separate interview, Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh raved about Israels contributions already, both on the field and in the locker room. Ive had some great, great conversations with him, and I think hes going to be an absolutely great addition to our defensive line, Suh told me Not only from a veteran perspective, but also from a production perspective. Even though hes been in the league 10 years, I think he still has a lot of production left in that thank. You can just see some of the things that Ive learned from him, in seeing his play. Suh explained that Israel is so fast and so adept at adjusting his pass-rush path to the depth of the quarterbacks drop, it helps him too as the left-side defensive tackle.

The Browns signed him as an undrafted free agent. He was on their practice squad for part of the 2003 season and ended the season on the Bears’ practice squad. He made the Bears’ 53-player roster for good in 2004 and became a full-time starter in 2010. As important as character and working in the community are, the priority in building a roster starts with what a player can produce on the field. In Idonije’s case, he holds up both ends. “We don’t bring anybody here just to be a mentor,” Coach Jim Schwartz said.

Bears Part Ways With Johnny Knox

Bears release wideout Johnny Knox

Knox underwent spinal fusion surgery to stabilize his fractured vertebra on Dec. 19, 2011, and the initial prognosis was that it would take approximately six months just to recover enough for him to begin rehabilitation for a return to the football field. The injury was more severe than originally anticipated, and it was later discovered Knox suffered from some nerve damage. When the Bears convened at Halas Hall last spring for workouts, it became clear Knox would face a difficult recovery. Knox admitted to losing 30 pounds of muscle, and the nerve damage caused the receiver to walk gingerly. Throughout the 2012 season Knox appeared to have regained some of the muscle had had lost, but he still wasn’t yet walking normally, which led to doubt about whether he’d ever return to form as one of the club’s speedier receivers.

Coach Lovie Smith told reporters that “Johnny has total movement throughout his body. … He is not paralyzed or anything like that. Johnny Knox (Associated Press) A positive outcome might not have seemed likely immediately after the scary, freak injury. Neel Anand, director of Orthopaedic Spine Surgery at the Cedars-Sinai Spine Center in Los Angeles, told Sean Jensen that he was encouraged by the news that Knox could move his limbs. Neurologically, he’s completely fine, Anand said ( via the Chicago Sun-Times ). The only thing left is the nature of the stability. Anand said the most common injury, based on the nature of the collision, occurs at the junction of the thoracic and lumbar curvatures. Doctors will be looking to determine whether Knox has suffered unstable or potentially unstable fracture. Surgeons most likely will stabilize the fracture with screws and rods. If it’s an innocuous fracture, and all he needs is screws and rods, he could come back in three to six months, Anand said. Anand told the Sun-Times that full movement bodes well for Knox.

He has total movement. He’s not paralyzed or anything.” NFL : Week 15 Knox had just caught a pass from Caleb Hanie about four minutes into Sunday’s game when Kam Chancellor poked the ball out of his hands. As Knox made a diving attempt to retrieve the ball, he was hit by Anthony Hargrove and got bent backward. He stayed down for close to 10 minutes while being tended to by medical personnel. The Seahawks’ Earl Thomas recovered the fumble at the Chicago 22. After getting loaded onto the cart, Knox moved his arms and raised his fist in the air, CBS Chicago’s Adam Hoge reports . The injury to Knox was another blow for a team that lost Jay Cutler (broken thumb) and Matt Forte (sprained knee) in recent weeks and was trying to get over the shock of receiver Sam Hurd’s arrest on federal drug charges in the days leading up to this game.

Bears’ Knox will open season on PUP list

Facing a 3rd-and-6 situation during the first series of the team’s second drive of the game, Bears quarterback Caleb Hanie fired a pass up the middle to Knox on a slant route. The third-year player reeled it in for a 17-yard gain. However, as Knox attempted to pick up yards after the catch, Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor dislodged the ball. As Knox dove to recover the fumble, he collided with Seahawks defensive end Anthony Hargrove. The contact with Hargrove bent Knox’s back at angle that looked as if very serious injury was a possibility. Initially, the Chicago crowd booed the fumble but soon changed its tune , realizing that Knox may be gravely injured. After being attended to by medical staff on the field for approximately 10 minutes, Knox was placed on a stretcher and carted off the field. He reportedly had movement in his hands and arms as he left the field. On the play when Knox suffered the injury, the loose ball was eventually scooped up by Seahawks safety Earl Bennet.

Ex-Bears receiver Johnny Knox gives up fight to play football

Johnny Knox wide receiver was recently terminated by Chicago Bears. Knox taked about his plans for future an exclusive interview.

Alex Ghanayem, a spine surgeon at Loyola University Medical Center, told the Tribune immediately after Knox’s injury that a six-month window would be the optimistic minimum before a player could return to football-related contact after sustaining such an injury. Knox finished last season with an average of 19.6 yards per catch, second-best in the NFL. He caught 37 passes for 727 yards with two touchdowns despite not being a favorite in then-offensive coordinator Mike Martz’s offense. Knox also returned 15 kickoffs for 397 yards with an average of 26.5 yards per return. The Bears are well-prepared to move on without Knox in the passing game after the addition of three-time Pro Bowl receiver Brandon Marshall as a vertical threat. New offensive coordinator Mike Tice plans to utilize Devin Hester more on offense as well, and quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates also has raved about Hester’s potential in the revamped offense. Eric Weems was signed to help handle the kick-return duties in place of Knox. Hester isn’t expected to play a significant role on kickoff returns but will remain as the primary punt returner. Knox, a former fifth-round pick, is Johnny Knox Authentic Womens Jersey entering the final year of his rookie deal and has a base salary of $1.26 million in 2012.

How Johnny Knox’s Promising Young Career Ended in the Blink of an Eye

The explosion he put on display at the combine was translating to the next level. Knox made the team. His football career would go on. During the 2009 season, Knox would catch 45 passes for 527 yards and five touchdowns. Seven of his catches went for 20 or more yards. He also racked up 927 yards returning kicks, including a 102-yard touchdown. Knox was named to the Pro Bowl as a special teamer after Percy Harvin was forced out to injury. The next season, he would lead the Bears in receiving yards with 960 and touchdown receptions with five. His 17 catches of 20 or more yards was good enough for 10th in the NFL. While 2011 wasn’t as kind to Knoxhe was on pace for less catches, yards, touchdowns and 20-yard plays than in 2010he still averaged nearly 19 yards a catch as Jay Cutler ‘s main receiving target. Knox likely wasn’t a prototypical No. 1 receiver, and few argued against the Bears needing to add help at receiver. But for three productive seasons, the former high school star who couldn’t find a JUCO coach to take him in was starring in a featured role for an NFL offense.

Johnny Knox lays on the field injured

Horn says hes been approached by some spinal injury-related foundations about partnering up with Knox, and hes finalizing some goodwill trips. He is scheduled to join a handful of NFL players, including former Bears defensive tackle Tommie Harris, on a trip to Uganda with Pros for Africa and Starkey the maker of hearing aids in March. Then, in May, along with the Robert and Mayari Pritzker Family Foundation, he will visit troops abroad with former Bears players. Its time to retire and move onto the next chapter, Horn says of his friends future, and it will be an incredible chapter. During the interview Wednesday, Knox is upbeat and smiles frequently. Asked how he remains so optimistic, Knox says, My whole life, Ive always been positive, and people ask me, Man, why are you so positive? But I know things will work out for the best. . Nfl Legend Gale Sayers Drops Concussion Lawsuit Against League

Winters had called them to say the matter was “a big misunderstanding” and that the suit would be dropped. Winters responded by telling the paper that Sayers had decided Saturday to withdraw the suit after requesting it be filed Tuesday. Sayers said that he spoke to Winters this week at the request of former Bears safety Shaun Gayle, but did not agree to sue the league. Winters responded that Gayle had nothing to do with the alleged original decision to sue the league. “I didn’t sign anything. I talked to the attorney, but there wasn’t nothing to it,” Sayers told the Tribune.

Gale Sayers NFL Lawsuit To Be Withdrawn, Bears Legend Won’t Pursue Concussion Claim

(AP Photo/Susan Walsh) By Brendan O’Brien Sept 21 (Reuters) – A lawyer for pro football Hall of Famer Gale Sayers said on Saturday he would drop a federal lawsuit filed on the former player’s behalf that accuses the National Football League of failing to warn him about and protect him against head injuries. Attorney John Winters told Reuters he would voluntarily withdraw the lawsuit, filed on Friday in United States District Court in Chicago, after hearing from the Sayers’ family that the Chicago Bears great no longer wanted to pursue the matter. Attempts by Reuters to get comment from Sayers were unsuccessful. The lawsuit came three weeks after the league agreed to pay $765 million to settle a lawsuit brought by thousands of former players, many suffering from dementia and health problems, who accused the league of hiding the dangers of brain injuries. Winters said Sayers, 70, contacted him earlier in the week, wanting to know about the concussion lawsuit against the NFL. “After that conversation, he instructed me to file a lawsuit and then today I found out through family members he no longer wants to pursue it,” Winters told Reuters on Saturday.

NFL great Gale Sayers denies he has sued NFL over concussions

Winters called them to say the suit will be dropped and that the situation was “a big misunderstanding.” Winters responded Saturday night by telling the Tribune that Sayers contacted him Tuesday to request the lawsuit filing, then decided Saturday to have it voluntarily withdrawn. Sayers, the Hall of Fame Bears running back, said he spoke with the attorney this past week at the behest of former Bears safety Shaun Gayle, but he did not agree to sue the NFL. Winters, who cited client-attorney privilege to withhold certain information, did say Saturday night: “Shaun Gayle had nothing to do with this (alleged original decision by Sayers to file a suit). “I had about one half of a concussion in all of the years that I played,” said Sayers, whose seven-year career ended prematurely in 1971 because of severe knee injuries. “I didn’t say any of the things he said in the paper.” Ardie Sayers said Winters, of the firm Winters, Salzetta & O’Brien, LLC in Chicago, had mailed paper work to their residence that they saw on Friday, but Gale Sayers did not sign any of the papers.

Gale Sayers withdraws concussion lawsuit he says he didn’t authorize

Hall of Fame running back Gale Sayers has withdraw a concussion lawsuit against the NFL. Per Fred Mitchell of the Chicago Tribune, Sayers contends it was filed without his authorization . I had about one half of a concussion in all of the years that I played, Sayed told the Tribune. I didnt say any of the things [lawyer John F. Winters] said in the paper. Winters claims Sayers authorized the filing of the lawsuit on Tuesday before changing his mind on Saturday. I didnt sign anything, Sayers said. I talked to the attorney, but there wasnt nothing to it. Sayers doesnt need to file suit to be included in the $765 million settlement; it covers all retired players. However, Sayers needs to have severe cognitive impairment in order to obtain compensation. Some players without severe cognitive impairment may choose to continue to pursue litigation. Other players without severe cognitive impairment who havent sued may still try to do so. Sayers isnt one of them.

The suit, which seeks unspecified damages, quotes Sayers as claiming he has had headaches and short-term memory loss since his retirement in 1971. But Sayers told the Tribune Saturday the suit was filed by Chicago attorney John Winters without his authorization after he had only discussed the possibility with Winters and fellow former Bear Shaun Gayle. “I didn’t sign anything. … I talked to the attorney, but there wasn’t nothing to it,” Sayers said.

The lawsuit also accused helmet maker Riddell of failing to warn him of the risks of concussions, and of not disclosing that the helmets would not prevent concussions. Sayers, known as the Kansas Comet, played running back for Chicago from 1965 to 1972, when he retired in the preseason. Sayers led the league twice in rushing and was a four-time Pro Bowler during his career that was cut short by knee injuries.

The fighter: Former BYU, NFL quarterback Jim McMahon aims to win the toughest challenge of his life

That was my first love, was baseball, and had I had a scholarship to play baseball. I probably would have played just baseball, McMahon said in an interview that aired Wednesday on Fox affiliate WFLD-TV. But football paid for everything, it still does. That Super Bowl XX team is still as popular as it ever was. A career on the baseball diamond rather than the gridiron probably would have prevented the 53-year-old from suffering from early-stage dementia. McMahon, who said he suffered four concussions during his playing career, is one of more than 2,400 retired players suing the NFL for concussion-related dementia and brain trauma. He said back then team doctors generally would ask him how he felt and if he could follow a finger with his eyes after taking a big hit during a game. They’d ask you questions, basic questions. Where are you, what day is it?

Jim McMahon doing better, welcomes concussion settlement

(Getty Images) Ex-NFL quarterback Jim McMahon, whose most persistent worry used to be the wrath of Mike Ditka, has a bit more on his mind these days. As reported by the Chicago Sun-Times , McMahon is one of seven former board members of Illinois’ Broadway Bank facing a lawsuit brought by the FDIC. The suit is an attempt to recover $104 million from 17 bad loans before the bank was shut down in 2010. According to the Sun-Times, the bank was owned by the family of Alexi Giannoulias, the former Illinois state treasurer who made an unsuccessful run for President Barack Obama’s old U.S. Senate seat two years ago.

Jim McMahon says he would have chosen baseball over football

“I don’t have the sharp pains. I don’t have the thoughts of killing myself.” Obviously it’s no good that McMahon is still struggling, but it’s certainly better than he’s able to actually move forward and remain OK with being alive. He credits the removal of a blockage in his neck that was causing spinal fluid to leak into his brain. “My head is not full of fluid,” McMahon said. “It’s not pounding. I can actually get up in the morning and walk down the hall and feel good.” McMahon also spoke about Thursday’s $765 million concussion lawsuit settlement , saying, via Pro Football Talk , that a lot of the players involved in the lawsuit are “worse off” than he is and need the relief that accompanies the settlement. “All these guys who are suffering along with me are going to get some relief,” McMahon said.

A lot of these guys are a lot worse off than I am. McMahon said hes enjoying retirement, and he doesnt sound like he has many regrets. But McMahon still believes that when he was playing, team doctors were more interested in helping teams win games than they were in taking care of players. And McMahon still believes that some of his former teammates have suffered because of that inadequate medical care. I dont think they were looking out for our best interests, thats for sure, McMahon said of team doctors. McMahon said hes glad the settlement was reached relatively quickly, while some players who need treatment may be able to get it in time to improve their lives: Its good to get this done now. 19 Responses to Jim McMahon doing better, welcomes concussionsettlement wryly1 says: Aug 30, 2013 10:26 AM I do not for a nanosecond discount the seriousness of long term damage from multiple concussions, but McMahon now sounds more sane and reasonable than he ever did in his playing days. nflpoker says: Aug 30, 2013 10:39 AM And of course, everyone who got a concussion during a game told the trainer during the game and the coach made them continue playing. Jay Cutler Learns To Trust Bears Coach Marc Trestman

Chicago Bears: Jay Cutler costs them this time

Now Trestman is in for Lovie Smith and Aaron Kromer for Tice Cutler’s fifth coordinator in six years dating to his final season with the Denver Broncos. It also could be Cutler’s last with the Bears if his contract year follows a familiar script. “The criteria going in,” Bears general manager Phil Emery told USA TODAY Sports of the coaching search, “is we really wanted somebody — regardless if it was an offensive or defensive coach that could really connect with our quarterback, really see the head coach and his ability to communicate with the quarterback and build our team from there, from the message through the quarterback. “There’s no more central figure or position player on your team than the quarterback. That communication gets carried over in so many ways in terms of coaches’ philosophy with the team and how we conduct ourselves on the field and how we tune in.

The only difference this year might be Cutler’s increasing awareness of that reality. “I’ve just got to give us a better chance at winning,” he said. His willingness to accept responsibility and explain each error displayed noticeably improved maturity that has been well-documented. The underthrown floater that safety Glover Quin easily picked off happened due to bad footwork. The third-quarter interception by Delmas, the safety’s second of the game, sailed on Cutler. On the fumble, Cutler acknowledged holding onto the ball too long — a chronically bad habit — so that unblockable beast Ndamukong Suh could strip the quarterback.

What will it cost to keep Jay Cutler?

“What you don’t want to see is three Jay Cutler Nike Elite Jersey turnovers, three turnovers, three turnovers, consecutive weeks like that. If you can minimize those, you’re going to be in a better place, obviously.” The staff hasn’t lost faith in Cutler’s ability to get the Bears there. “There were three good performances [to start the season] and one, as we said, he would want back,” Bears coach Marc Trestman said. “But he’s been unflappable in practice. I just think it’s the unflappability and the emotional stability of just being able to move on to the next play and isolating that play as the only one that really is important, and then forgetting about it and moving on.” But Cutler hasn’t yet caught amnesia regarding the performance at Detroit last week, one in which he completed 57.4 of his passes for a passer rating of 65.6. Cutler admitted that feelings of accountability for what transpired against the Lions have affected his preparation for the Saints in a way that gives him the mentality that he must “take care of the ball” because “we can’t give them free opportunities.” “Sometimes it’s hard to walk back into that locker room and know that, ‘Hey, I was responsible for four turnovers,’ and you put your team in that position,” Cutler said. “It makes you feel bad because I thought the defense played their butts off.

Cutler hopes to rebound from bad game

After all, he did get recruited to play at Vanderbilt before getting drafted into the NFL, so he obviously had some talent at the high school level. But did you know that Cutler used to play basketball at Heritage Hills High School in Indiana, too?
